Former Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards has admitted that the club’s planned move to a new stadium represents ‘progress’ even though he is reluctant to see them move from Old Trafford.

It was John Henry Davies who financed the move to the stadium from Bank Street in 1910. It was James Gibson whose money rebuilt the stadium after bombing during the Second World War. The stadium’s biggest transformation, though, came during the period when the club was owned by the Edwards family.

Its evolution into the distinctive asymmetrical design we are familiar with today came mostly under the tenure of Martin Edwards, following a failed sale to Michael Knighton who had promised to redevelop the Stretford end. Edwards floated the club, and over the following decade, the stadium was enlarged to become the arena it is today. The final increase of attendance came under the Glazer ownership, but was work already in progress, and as such, Martin Edwards was effectively the last owner to oversee any significant redevelopment to the stadium.
