Nobody could forget the first two games of Michael Carrick’s reign as Manchester United manager (no, not the two that he took charge of in 2021) earlier this year. United won, and deserved to win, thrilling encounters with Manchester City and Arsenal in back-to-back fixtures.
In performances that scarcely seemed possible from the group of players who looked like strangers more often than they looked like a cohesive unit under Ruben Amorim, United not only won those games, but dominated in a proactive fashion that looked reminiscent of what a Manchester United team ought to look like under the Trade Descriptions Act.
