The fact that Michael Carrick was persistently pushed - three times, no less - on the topic of passion in his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s match at Fulham is an illustration of the fact that this was the week many in the media have been waiting for.
United lost back-to-back matches at Old Trafford against Manchester City and Brighton, and both matches came with their own unique form of humiliation. It provided substance to the theory that the club stood to struggle this season - their light schedule was often suggested as a reason that contributed to their Champions League qualification with the squad they had, but, with extra games and more than one game a week, many predicted that United would find it tough to compete.
