Como capitulation leaves Carrick on brink
21.10.26, 20:47 6 Minute Read
Manchester United slumped to a catastrophic defeat at Como, their heaviest European defeat of the 21st century, to leave Michael Carrick under severe pressure as head coach, and putting the club on the brink of significant change once again.
Nico Paz, the Argentinian playmaker, was the architect of this latest downfall which was poor enough to rank with some of the club’s worst days in modern history; a performance that bore the familiar hallmark of the defeat to Watford in November 2019 which ultimately spelled the end for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Carrick had insisted that the draw at Elland Road at the weekend was a fresh start, and evidence that his players were looking out for each other, but in Italy they seemed intent on proving him wrong from the start. It has been a dire run of form which has seen some players put in their worst-ever performances for the club, and tonight it was the turn of Harry Maguire, who seemed at the visible heart of every laceration inflicted on his team.
