Manchester United humiliated by Bournemouth – and Carrick will carry the can

In the 1980s, a defeat to Bournemouth was the most embarrassing Manchester United suffered all decade.   The Cherries have won 3-0 on two of their last three visits to Old Trafford - their last trip to M16 being last December’s 4-4 draw - and it was no surprise that they repeated the trick, punishing a bereft Michael Carrick and his team to leave the manager surely on the verge of being dismissed.

As this group of players seek new ways to plummet to new depths in their series of humiliations in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, it was not necessarily the scale of the defeat, nor even the shame of their half-hearted showing after a rally cry from Carrick about what it means to represent the club. It was the shame they had earned all for themselves, and that is that this repeat defeat was now expected and part of their own pattern, part of their unique thumbprint in the club’s history.
