Julian Nagelsmann has emerged as the preferred candidate to succeed Michael Carrick as Manchester United manager, The 1878 understands.

There was intense speculation that Carrick may have lost his job today, but he is expected to take control of the Bournemouth game at Old Trafford on Sunday and therefore face the press in Friday’s pre-match press conference at Carrington.

However, there is a growing sense that Carrick’s departure will be inevitable regardless of the result on Sunday after the club have suffered their worst start to a season in the Premier League era, a shocking start to their Champions League campaign, and mutiny within the camp with post-match outbursts from senior players Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes.
