In their first away game back in the Champions League, Manchester United were outworked and outclassed by an Atletico Madrid side who boasted and showed off their superior European quality and experience.

A goal from Pablo Barrios inside a minute, and an Ademola Lookman tap in five minutes after Leny Yoro was sent off deep into the second half, were the takeaways from the on-pitch action; whilst the most explosive the visitors ever were came in the post-match press conferences, where Lisandro Martinez sensationally blasted the running of the club.

That’s a story that will run over the course of the rest of the week, but first, the tale of the tape. Time was that a return to the Champions League after some time away would serve as a testing ground for a new Manchester United side looking to prove themselves against the continental elite. Time was that a Manchester United side would never go down so meekly without a real fight.
