WAYNE BARTON ON MONDAY: Michael Carrick is the latest victim of Manchester United leadership

A few years ago, I was present at a meeting which included a small number of high-ranking Old Trafford officials. During that meeting, I was speaking about the history of the club, and when I mentioned Harry Gregg, one of those officials stopped me to ask who I was talking about.

That person had been involved at the club for a period of time which made their ignorance inexcusable and almost unforgiveable, particularly as they had been at the club for at least one commemoration of the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.

I was polite and informational about Harry’s importance to Manchester United, but I was bewildered to be in that position.
