Michael Carrick’s "more" call and the reality of United leadership

“We would like more,” Manchester United manager Michael Carrick told the press on the eve of the club’s final pre-season friendly. “We need to keep pushing for more.”
Carrick is indoctrinated in the language of the club; a dialogue saturated in caution and protection, so those who were quick to interpret the comment as a demand for extra transfer funds from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family may well need to reacquaint themselves with the Old Trafford thesaurus.
United have signed two senior midfielders, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, two backup goalkeepers in Karl Darlow and Kit Margetson, and youngster Tynan Thompson over the summer, while Leicester City’s prodigious midfielder Louis Page looks set to follow, and the noise is that Thompson and Page can expect to experience similar first-team exposure to that of Ayden Heaven, who has been hugely impressive since his move from Arsenal in January 2025.
