Michael Carrick insisted that fine margins are responsible for Manchester United’s poor start to the season but for the first time it seemed as though he was under-estimating the situation.
The dissatisfaction of the Old Trafford crowd as United lost 3-2 to Brighton in the Carabao Cup - after being 2-0 up - suggests the pressure is well and truly on the manager to turn things around.
And there is something to be turned around. There are patterns developing that are concerning and unwelcome. There are rebuttals and reprisals for some, but when those individual events become tied to a thread, a trend, then questions must be asked. This has been a big week for Manchester United, and for Carrick, and it’s been a testing one.
